SuccessesMainstream Programme
In our last newsletter we had an article by Christine Hepburn who was working part time. Since then, Christine has started a 2 year placement on the Mainstream Programme at the Civil Aviation Authority in Petone. She is enjoying her position as a records asistant in the CAA’s library and although she had no experience when she started, she is learning on the job. Although she only started in late March, she has become part of the team, including taking a turn at chairing the weekly meeting. During the two year placement, Christine will be eligible for further training funded by the State Services Commission to help her become “job ready”. The signs are already good. At her 3 month review, her supervisor stated that Christine was an asset the CAA would want to further develop even after the 2 year placement has ended.
Gardening Contract In Hutt Valley
Andrew and Shane working at Hutt Park. In March 2007, Valley Transitionz secured an on-going contract with Excell Corporation for the upkeep of the sand dunes at Days Bay, the Petone Beach area and Hutt Park. After the workers were shown the difference between a “weed” and a “protected plant” - they look very similar!! there was no holding them back. They have been very lucky with the weather and have been able to keep on top of weeds and maintenance. The work has varied for the 2 - 4 workers on the contract with each job taking between 2 and 10 days. Lets hope the good weather continues.
Another Successful Placement
When Dale heard about the vacancy for yardman at Wellington Provedoring in Seaview, he was keen to "go of it". After a quick and informal interview in March 2007, Dale started working 10 hours a week. The job is interesting and varied and includes cleaning out containers that have come off the ships and loading trucks. Dale is also responsible for ensuring that the shelves are well stocked and the premises is kept clean and tidy. The six month placement has flown by and in the time, Dale's hours have increased to 12 hours a week. Dale is happy at Wellington Provedoring and said "Valley Transitionz and this job have helped boost my confidence. I enjoy the work and Ian and Dave know I can be left to work without supervision." "It is great that they have confidence in me." Manager and part owner, Dave Clements said " I would not hesitate to promote the Valley Transitionz programme, we have found a great asset with Dale" Now that the six month placement has ended, Dave has confirmed that Wellington Provedoring will be asking Dale to stay on in the job. |
