Employers Breakfast, Karen's Success!

2008 Employers’ Breakfast

The first Employers’ Breakfast for 2008 took place on 23rd May 2008. Employers turned up on a cold day to hear encouraging stories from people who have come a very long way in their journey to success.

After the breakfast people, listened with avid interest to Alan Taylor’s talk about the history of Valley Transitionz.

After Alan’s introduction to Valley Transitionz, Jody Archibald from M.K. Archibald spoke about the successful relationship between M K Archibald and Valley Transitionz over the past year. She spoke about the successful placement of Jon who works in the warehouse. In October 2007 they offered him a permanent job and he is still working with them. He has a great ability to fit in and do what is required. He is hard working, confident and really gets on with all those around him; he is a model employee.

David Stuart spoke next. He has been with Valley Transitionz. for about four and a half years. He mentioned he had a small desire to work and began work in the kitchen at Take 5 in the hope of getting a reference. His confidence level was increased by this work. His goal now is to get a job.

Peter Hall talked about facing challenges and how Valley Transitionz helped him face those challenges and defeat them. Through Valley Transitionz he got a job at the Lower Hutt     Hospital. In three years he has gone from someone who was terrified to leave the house, to standing up in front of a group of people talking about his experiences thanks to the support from Valley Transitionz.

Lindsay, an artist, heard of Valley Transitionz through WINZ. He had never really had a job since leaving school. He started off with Valley Transitionz doing gardening and talked about the support Valley Transitionz gave him in this enterprise. He now does 12 hours a week at Summerset Trentham as a housekeeper/laundryman and works 8 hours a week in the warehouse at M K Archibald; a total of 20 hours a week.

The Breakfast was very successful with 20 people attending. The next Breakfast meeting is in November and the Valley Transitionz team look forward to seeing you there.

New Job, New Beginning!

The only job Karen has ever wanted, was to work in the kitchen of a residential home. Even better if it could be in Upper Hutt, where she lives. As part of her volunteer tasks, she has been working in the kitchen at M.A.S.H in Upper Hutt for quite a while, she also attended a Food Handling Course run by Weltec and then she waited. Valley Transitionz has helped Karen find the job she has been dreaming of!!

Karen has just started a 6 month placement as a Kitchen Assistant at Summerset Trentham. She helps in the kitchen by making sandwiches, loading and unloading the dishwasher, putting clean crockery and cutlery away and cleans the freezers and other areas. These may seem to be small jobs but they are all jobs that need doing. Karen is proud to be doing them and her self esteem has increased tremendously since she started work. Karen is gaining invaluable work experience and she is looking forward to her first ever pay packet.
